Brandon Figueroa became a two-time world champion over the weekend defeating Mark Magsayo, via a 12-round unanimous decision. The fight was overshadowed by the referee taking two points from Magsayo for holding, as well as wide scorecards that didn’t reflect the numeric values depicted via CompuBox stats, proving that Figueroa is a top modern featherweight.
What is next for Figueroa seems to be to consolidate the WBC title with the champion Rey Vargas, who recently went up to super featherweight as he challenged O’Shaquie Foster, unsuccessful in hopes of becoming a three-division world champion. Vargas’ decision to move up in weight allowed for Figueroa and Magsayo to fight for the interim world title, hence why we in theory have two world champions at this weight class currently. It is important to note, Rey Vargas, watched the main event at ringside this past Saturday as well.
Though Rey Vargas should be next, Figueroa made it clear he wants the best of the best, and is not picking his next fight. Figueroa is the type of fighter who simplifies the sport of boxing, he just wants the best available opponent, and armed with an action-packed, explosive style, he is readily becoming a fan favorite, if nothing else for his recklessness.
“Right now I am down to fight anyone,” said Brandon Figueroa as he wore the WBC title in the press conference. “Anyone who wants to fight, I am here. As you can see I come to fight no matter who is in my way.”
If Vargas were to face Figueroa it seems an ideal location quite possible could be to have the fight take place in Texas as given both fighters ties to Texas. Figueroa is a Texan at heart, and Vargas fighting his last two bouts in Texas, the fight would make sense to end up at a venue like the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas, though no venue has been laid out, nor has a fight between Figueroa and Vargas even been confirmed. If it were a Texas venue might be the best possible location for such a fight.
“I felt strong,” said Figueroa when speaking about his fighting at featherweight for the second time in his career. “I just don’t stop. I don’t get tired and I’m relentless and I came forward and I wanted the fight. Whoever wants to fight me, I’ll fight. I want to fight for a world title. I just want to give the fans the fights they want.”
